Shopify pixel not working? How to check and fix it
Here's the uncomfortable truth behind most "my ads suddenly stopped converting" panics: the ads are fine β the tracking broke, silently, days ago. Shopify pixels (Meta, Google, TikTok) can show βconnectedβ in your admin while sending nothing at all. This guide gives you a fast, reliable way to find out, and what to do about it.
Step 1: Don't trust the "connected" status
The connection badge in your Shopify sales-channel settings only means the OAuth link between Shopify and the ad platform exists. It says nothing about whether events are flowing right now. Merchants routinely report pixels that show connected for weeks while recording zero purchases. Shopify can also throttle a pixel's data flow with no banner, email, or admin warning β the badge stays green while conversion events silently stop.
Step 2: Compare reported events against real orders
This is the one check that catches every failure mode, including partial under-reporting:
- Open your ad platform's event tool β Meta Events Manager (Data Sources β your pixel), Google Ads β Conversions or GA4's Realtime report, or TikTok Events Manager.
- Note how many
Purchaseevents it received in the last 24β48 hours. - Open Shopify admin β Orders, and count actual orders in the same window.
- They will never match perfectly (ad blockers, iOS privacy, consent decline cost you 10β30%). But if the platform saw far fewer purchases than Shopify took β or zero β your tracking is broken, not your ads.
Step 3: Run a live test event
- In Meta Events Manager, open the Test Events tab, enter your store URL, and browse your own store: view a product, add to cart, start checkout.
- Each action should appear within seconds. If
PageViewfires butAddToCart/InitiateCheckoutdon't, your event wiring is partially broken. - For checkout and purchase events, place a cheap real test order (you can refund it). Purchase events failing while everything else fires is the classic post-checkout-migration symptom.
The usual culprits, in order of likelihood
- Shopify's checkout changes. Checkout extensibility removed
checkout.liquidand the oldadditional scriptsbox. Any tracking that lived there died when your store migrated β quietly. Fix: use the official channel app's native integration or a Customer Events (web pixel) implementation. - Consent/cookie banner misconfiguration. If your consent app defaults to "denied" and nothing updates it, you're dropping every event in regions that require consent β and often everywhere, if it's misconfigured.
- App conflicts. Two apps both injecting the same pixel ID produces duplicate or malformed events; platforms sometimes respond by discarding them. If you've installed or removed a tracking app recently, that's your prime suspect.
- An expired token or disconnected asset. Meta business account changes, password resets, or permission changes can invalidate the connection behind the scenes while the badge stays green. Disconnect and reconnect the channel app.
- Platform-side throttling or review. Merchant Center suspensions and Meta data-quality throttles stop event processing with little or no notice.
How to catch it in minutes instead of weeks
Every fix above is discoverable the moment you look β the problem is that nobody looks daily. Smart merchants automate the Step-2 comparison in a spreadsheet and check it every morning. That works; it also takes 20β30 minutes a week, forever.
Or let PixelVitals watch it for you
PixelVitals compares what your Meta, Google, and TikTok pixels report against your actual Shopify orders, around the clock, and alerts you the moment events go silent or drift β with the estimated untracked revenue since. Nothing added to your storefront; works alongside whatever tracking you already run.
